I am an MK (missionary kid) and mother of two grown children. Altho' my husband is Japanese (from Koriyama), and we speak Japanese at home, my education (elementary-university) has been in English, so most of my reading and writing is in English too. Last year, we moved to Okinawa and now live in the house my Dad built. I was born in Okinawa--it's been a long time, but I've come home...at last. 2025 August posts are publications put out by wildlife of a Saitama park in 2019.

PARK REVIEW issue 05 Attila the Hen (I think this is one of my favorites.)

The Review  Issue 5   -Put out by “the Leo Birds”/Sept – Leonard the Mallard

The Review would be remiss not to tell you about a captivating bird “at the park”. Attila the Hen lives in a pen in front of the house just across the street from the front entrance.

Attila the Hen – Most people don’t know about her; did you?

It’s just that cameramen mob the park to get photographs of the vivid blue Kawasemi bird that has been sighted there. And some people come to the park and “ooh and aah” at the graceful herons that nest atop its trees or glide through the sky. They don’t notice the white hen with the black face who struts proudly in her turf right nearby.

Attila, altho’ you wouldn’t guess by her appearance, is widely read; quick-witted, and has a huge vocabulary. And Attila knows they do “Rajio Taiso” (radio calisthenics) every morning on the grounds and wants to keep up with all those frequenting the park.

Attila isn’t much trouble to her owners. Thats probably why they keep filling her feeding tray full...what, Attila? Oh right. I meant, they keep her tray full of private matters to look into later. Ha! Meet her sometime. You’ll wonder how you missed such a gem! -Leonard
