Marble had seen what had happened at the procession, when Goldie approached the young carp in command of the parade. Perhaps he had been preoccupied with his many responsibilities of the day to give Goldie more time and respect, but that had been curt. Especially because Goldie had been losing her self-respect rapidly recently. This wasn’t going to help matters any.
Marble decided to talk it over with Marmalade, who also had great admiration for Goldie and and grown up with her. Marble felt he could talk to Marmalade about anything, dream together, even be silly together. In the end, Marble ended up telling Marmalade about what was happening with Goldie, what had happened at the parade; and Marmalade, knowing about their fiery temperaments and what would happen if they tried to talk with each other, decided to speak to Goldie himself and cheer her up.
When Slit, a nearby carp saw the trouble they took to help Goldie, he couldn’t help but marvel at the concern Marble took for Goldie—so when they had a spat, the normally uninvolved Slit found himself going to Goldie and imploring her not to let go of such a friend—such were few and far between.
