Since June, I have been taking my sister's place teaching English Conversation classes and have been running into linguistic puzzlers. Why do we say certain things certain ways? Much of the language, I have been realizing, we go ahead and use because...that's just the way it's always been said. Below is an example:
The driver of the cadillac sighted, in his rearview mirror, the black-and-white driving down the parkway. It turned when he did, and when he parked in his driveway, the patrolcar pulled up at the curb. He almost had cardiac arrest when he saw the officer getting out of the car: it was the dashing blonde with the arresting smile who was at the site the day before. She could cite details and finger guilty parties!
"Mr. Roderick, you're under arrest for trafficking illegal goods."

Bethel English Conversation classes used to be held at church. When my sister went to the U.S., that meant I no longer had a ride to church...so we had classes in her apartment, just below ours. But then the church moved, and...oh; subject for next post.
